As a nonprofit college, we at Remington not only want to support our students in reaching their career goals through job training programs, we are dedicated to improving the communities we serve. Often, that means we have strong relationships with businesses in the community.
As a technical school, we strive to give students a real-world look at their chosen career field, as well as to connect them with businesses for employment opportunities. 1
This facet of our mission was on display recently when our Remington College Baton Rouge Campus process technology students were able to tour Shell Convent Refinery, a major employer of skilled workers.
Throughout the three-and-a-half-hour exclusive visit, students got a first-hand look at where a process technology career could take them.
During their trip, the students learned about the refinery and its production processes, had an in-depth conversation on safety procedures and received a guided tour of Shell's facilities. They were even able to view the control room and emergency response capabilities. To end the educational experience, students participated in a question-and-answer session with an employee panel composed of people who began as operators.
To further assist students on their educational journey, Shell donated piping and instrumentation diagrams from retired units to the process technology program.
The Process Technology Associate Degree Program focuses on process instrumentation, process electricity, introduction to chemistry, quality control and process technology operations. It's designed to help develop the skills and provide the knowledge necessary to qualify for entry-level positions as process operators in industries such as: petroleum refineries, pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, power generation, wastewater treatment plants, and food processing.1 Because many of these students are looking for process technology jobs, such as an operator, the visit to Shell gave them the opportunity to see what a future career could be like for them.
As a nonprofit, Remington College Baton Rouge Campus is always looking for ways to give back to its community. By donating its time and knowledge to the next generation of skilled workers, Shell is a shining example of a local partner complementing the college's goal.
